I was thinking about the culture in Valley of Death, but it is better to make it explicit.

The problem I have faced in aligning Open Innovation with strategy. Innovation happens in detailed development. Corporate strategy (or even R&D strategy) is not flowed down to that level of detail. Do you have some examples of how anyone has achieved an effective open strategy?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09729968599282491883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6194977843764799641.post-6267792998165040382012-02-05T23:50:53.922-08:002012-02-05T23:50:53.922-08:00Good points taht explain some of the factors why O...Good points taht explain some of the factors why OI is hard to implement. Maybe in a future revision the list could be extended by some cultural barriers to OI adoption.

Overall, I think the view on OI should be changed. OI is not a "snake oil" cure-for-all-panaceas. Applied wisely, it can open new potentials in markets, processes and technologies.

However, before materializing these potentials, there are some thoughts necessary that need to be thoroughly, e.g.

STRATEGY - Where should the firm be open and where not? Which open approach is most relevant to which fields where the firm should be open?

ORGANIZATION - How should OI be embedded into existing structures / processes? How should the firm prepare itself for inflow of external input (Most of new innovators will run at a faster clock-speed than the firm)?

PROCESSES / IT - How should individual topics within the defined OI fields be discussed / prepared internally before they are pushed into the relevant open approaches for innovation? How will external ideas be evaluated?

Best,
FrankFrank Matteshttp://www.innovation-3.comnoreply@blogger.com
